There are many questions that once you have decided to volunteer that you may wish to ask someone. Hopefully on this page you will find the answers to some of those questions.

Please feel free to download our booklet on your rights and responsibilities.

What can I do as a volunteer?

There are a huge variety of opportunities throughout the Swindon and area; we work with around 230 organisations who offer a range of opportunities. Opportunities vary from organisation to organisation, some may be dealing with members of the public, and others may be one-to-one work with people with specific needs. At Volunteer Centre Swindon we will do our best to find opportunities that will match your interests and skills to help you get as much as possible from your volunteering.

How much time will I have to give?

As much or as little as you want. Some organisations require a regular commitment while others will be happy with a more casual arrangement.

Can I try something first?

The majority of organisations we work with will be more than happy to arrange a visit before you actually start to volunteer to see if it is for you.

What about expenses?

Most organisations will pay, at a minimum, travel expenses; however, we do have a few registered with us that don't. We always advise people when we pass on the organisation's details as to their expenses policy.

What happens after you have given me the contact details of the organisation?

It is up to you to contact the organisation and find out more about the opportunity, and then arrange to meet with the manager/volunteer co-ordinator. Before you actually start volunteering, you may have to undergo an interview or an informal chat. You may need to be CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) checked (the organisation will arrange this for you), and you may have to give names of referees or be asked for references.
